AI with Awareness Inside
 - AWAI 2024

24 - 26 February, 2024 - Rome, Italy

Within the 16th International Conference on Agents and Artificial Intelligence - ICAART 2024

CO-CHAIRS

Luc Steels
High Performance AI, Barcelona Supercomputing Center
Spain

Brief Bio
Luc Steels has been an ICREA research fellow at the Institute for Evolutionary Biology (UPF-CSIC) in Barcelona. He studied computer science at MIT (US) and became a a professor of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the University of Brussels (VUB) in 1983. He founded the VUB AI Lab. In 1996 Steels founded the Sony Computer Science Laboratory in Paris. Steels is currently associated with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and the Venice international University where he pursues his interests in bringing Meaning and Understanding into AI, Value-Aware AI, and more fairness for musicians in digital music distribution and generation.
Giulio Prevedello
Sony CSL - Paris
France

Brief Bio
Mathematician by training, Giulio carried out his PhD at Hamilton Institute (Maynooth University, Ireland) doing statistical analysis and probabilistic models for biology. After one year of postdoc at Institut Curie (France) he joined Sony CSL-Paris, where he now works as Associate Researcher in data science to understand patterns of engagement in the creative industry and in the news. He leads Sony CSL’s team in VALAWAI, an European project on the development of a Value-Aware AI, delving into the matters of machine awareness and morality.

SCOPE

Recently the discussion on whether AI systems can become aware or conscious has been heating up. The topic has been active on the margins of AI for a long time but now there is increased work and interest, stimulated by increased funding, such as from the Awareness Inside Portfolio of projects in the EU Pathfinder program. In addition, consciousness is attributed to Large Language Models, raising further questions about what consciousness is and what it is for. This workshop brings together researchers working on the edge of AI research on topics of awareness and consciousness.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
  • Applications That Can Benefit from Awareness
  • Architectures for Awareness
  • Attribution of Consciousness to Generative AI
  • Measures for Awareness
  • Relation to Attention and Context Mechanisms
  • Self-Awareness
